Our Story
From a handful of orphaned children to a UK-registered charity transforming a Ugandan community.
WHERE IT BEGAN
A response to a need we could not ignore
Mushunga Community Project began as a grassroots response to the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children in Mushunga, Ibanda District, Uganda. There was no grand plan — just a refusal to walk past hungry, unschooled children who had no one left to advocate for them.
What started as meals and shelter for a handful of children has grown into a registered UK charity, a fully functioning primary school, a working farm and a project that gives dozens of children the same chance every child deserves: a safe home, an education and someone who believes in them.

BUILDING A SCHOOL
Victorious Community School
Over the years the project established Victorious Community School (VCS), providing quality education starting from Grade 1 and expanding one grade at a time — now up to Grade 5, with plans to reach Grade 7 in line with Uganda's Ministry of Education and Sports policies.

VCS gives our orphaned and sponsored children — and children from the surrounding community — a real start in life: trained teachers, structured learning, daily meals and a safe place to be a child.
2022 - FORMALISING GOVERNANCE
A formal governance structure takes shape
In 2022 the project took a major step forward by formalising its structure as a registered NGO in Uganda — bringing clearer accountability, stronger financial controls and a firmer foundation for growth.

For the first time, the day-to-day work in Mushunga was supported by experienced volunteers bringing governance, fundraising and professional oversight without ever pulling a penny away from the children.

EARLY 2025 — A LANDMARK MOMENT
Registered as a UK charity
In early 2025 we were thrilled to register and establish the UK charity — Mushunga, Ibanda Children UK Charity (Charity Number 1215211), registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

This milestone ensures better governance, accountability and Gift Aid eligibility, and it opens the door to long-term partnerships with European donors, schools, churches and businesses who want to give with confidence.
SUSTAINABILITY
A farm built to feed and fund the future
The journey has also included building a farm to support long-term sustainability through coffee planting, bull fattening, chicken brooding and maize growing. The aim is simple: reduce dependency on donations year by year by generating food and income from our own land.

A water source has been found and secured at the farm, and we are working to extend this supply to the orphanage and school — ending the daily walk for water for many of our children.

THE JOURNEY SO FAR
Milestones along the way
EARLY YEARS
A grassroots response
What began as a small effort to provide food and shelter for a handful of orphaned children in Mushunga, Ibanda District, grew into a registered project serving dozens of children with education, nutrition, healthcare and a loving home.
BUILDING VCS
Victorious Community School opens
We established Victorious Community School (VCS), beginning with Grade 1 and adding one grade each year. We are now teaching up to Grade 5, with plans to reach Grade 7 in line with Uganda's Ministry of Education and Sports.
2022
International board formed
The project took a major step forward by forming an international board with members from the UK, USA, Australia and Uganda — formalising the structure as a registered NGO and unlocking greater reach and support.
EARLY 2025

TODAY
Sustainability and scale
91% of our children are sponsored and 100% of donor funds go directly to the community. The farm — coffee, maize, bull fattening and chicken brooding — and a secured water source at the farm are powering our long-term sustainability plan.

TODAY
Where we are now
Today, 91% of our children are sponsored by generous supporters around the world, and 100% of donor funds go directly to the community. We remain committed to complete transparency and to the belief that every child's story can change for the better.

The story is far from finished. Expanding the orphanage to welcome more children, completing the school up to Grade 7, piping water to every building and growing the farm into a fully self-sustaining operation are the next chapters — and we are writing them together with our donors.
