HEALTHY & WELLBEING
A SAFE PLACE TO GROW UP

Health and wellbeing begin with a stable, secure home
The children in our care have usually experienced loss, disruption or hardship long before they arrive at Mushunga. Rebuilding health and wellbeing starts with the basics: a bed of their own, a meal they can count on, an adult who knows their name, and a clear routine of school, play and rest.
Caretakers live on site and provide consistent day-to-day care. Nurses and local clinicians handle routine health needs, and we work with district health services for more complex cases. Nutrition is planned around the produce grown on our own farm, supplemented by locally sourced staples.
Every child follows a personal care plan reviewed regularly by our team, covering physical health, education, emotional wellbeing and family contact where appropriate.

NUTRITION, WATER AND PREVENTIVE HEALTH
Most childhood illness here is preventable
The majority of the health burden on rural Ugandan children is not treated illness — it's illness that never had to happen in the first place: waterborne disease from unsafe surface water, stunting from under-nutrition, malaria from unnetted sleeping areas, respiratory infections from poor ventilation.
Our health program prioritizes prevention. A borehole and pipeline deliver clean water directly to the orphanage, school, kitchen and entire project. Meals are planned around protein and micro-nutrient targets, not just calories. Sleeping areas are netted, well-ventilated, and inspected regularly.
For partners funding health work, this preventive focus means every pound stretches further — because it removes the need for treatment before it starts, and keeps children in school rather than out sick.
